At Artisan Gateworks, we strive to make the purchase of your custom gate or architectural panel as stress free as possible. Some of the questions we have encountered are regarding the powder coat finish on our garden gates and driveway gates. Below is some helpful information explaining the process and benefits of getting your gate and panels powder coated.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating refers to a metal finishing process, typically used for outdoor products and structures in industries around the world. The powder used in the coating process is a mixture of finely ground pigment and resin. The dry powder is given a positive charge as it is shot through a special electrostatic gun. The charged powder particles then attach themselves to the grounded metal surfaces until the powder is fused into a smooth coating in the curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high quality and attractive finish.
Why should I powder coat my custom gate?
Three words: Durable, Beautiful, and Consistent.
Durable – Powder coating typically produces a coating twice as thick as standard paint. Properly powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, scratching, and wearing than liquid paint or other finishes. We have also found that powder coated driveway gates stand up far better to rock chips and other common street side damage.
Beautiful – The colors of your decorative steel gate will remain bright and vibrant over a longer period of time compared to liquid paint.
Consistent – Another big advantage is the coatings flexibility and ability to bend and yield with the material it is applied to, which allows it to fill and smooth out the final finish.
What kinds of color options are available?
Color selection is virtually unlimited with flat, satin, gloss, high gloss, metallic, clear, iridescent, fluorescent, hammer tone, and glitter finishes available. Texture selections range from smooth surfaces to wrinkled and rough textures designed for hiding surface imperfections.
Artisan Gateworks offers a list of 41 standard powder coat colors. If you are interested in any specialty non-stock finishes (such as metallic, textured, fluorescent, etc) or any color not on our standard color list, let us know so we can check pricing and availability!
Overall, powder coating gives our customers the most economical, longest lasting, and color-durable quality finishes available for their unique decorative steel gate.
